Cynthia Newton

Mrs. Cynthia Catron Newton, 93 of Bridgeport, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2022. Funeral services were held on Monday, November 21, 2022 at Rudder Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Josh Myers officiating. Interment followed at St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

Cynthia was born on Wednesday, September 25, 1929 in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, and her family moved to Dorans Cove in Bridgeport where she had many wonderful childhood memories. She attended Mount Carmel Elementary, Bridgeport Middle and High School and graduated in 1949 from City High School in Chattanooga. She attended Tennessee Tech University, majoring in Early Childhood Education. While in Chattanooga, she was a member of Hixson Methodist Church for many years. She taught kindergarten at Central Baptist Church, now Abbas House in Hixson for 13 years. She also taught piano lessons for many years.

When she and her husband retired to live in Doran’s Cove, they were active members at Hopewell Baptist Church, and later at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church. Cynthia was very creative with her sewing, drawing, piano music and so much more. Also, she was known as the Peanut Brittle Lady and directed many children choirs at churches and was active with young groups. She also played piano for churches and sang in the choir.

She is survived by her son, Garry Newton; daughter Carla (Tad) Feeney; grandsons, Brian Newton, J. Andrew (Andy) Newton; step-grandsons, Norris Feeney, Colin Feeney; great-grandchildren, Rilea Newton, Joshua Newton, Samual Newton, Quinn Feeney, Ian Feeney, Everett Feeney; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Newton; parents, Walter and Johnnie Catron; brother, John Catron; sister, Ella Morrison.

The family wishes to thank all the caregivers and hospice help who were such a blessing to her and the family. Special thanks to longtime caregiver, Janet Maahs and property manager, Russ Purnell.
