William “Bill” Royce Nevin, age 79 of Scottsboro, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2025. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 from the Scottsboro Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Matt Helms officiated. Interment followed in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Nevin is survived by his wife, Regina Hamner Nevin; brother, Daniel Bruce (Carmen) Nevin; children, Louis James (Kristy) Banister, Amber Katherine Nevin, Carrie Lee (Jon) Wilbanks; and grandchildren, Corbin James Parker, Jonah Hugh Parker, and Noah James Banister.
Mr. Nevin was preceded in death by his parents, Erbie Royce Nevin and Bessie Virginia Rogers Nevin.
Mr. Nevin was born July 16, 1945 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee during World War II while his parents were working on the Manhattan Project. He referred to himself as an “atomic baby” as this was the date the first atomic bomb was tested.
He was raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School, class of 1963. He graduated from the University of Alabama, class of 1968 and did graduate studies at the University of Alabama and Tennessee Technological University.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1968 – 1972 with service in the Vietnam War. From 1968-1969 he served in the Mobile Riverine Force (Brown Water Navy) in the Mekong River Delta. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 6073.
He taught junior high and high school sciences in Tuscaloosa, AL; Dayton, TN; and Pikeville, TN. He retired from The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) with 23 years of service at the Watts Bar, Bellefonte, and Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plants where he worked as a Construction Inspector and Quality Assurance Engineer.
Mr. Nevin was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and managing his forest lands. But the best years of his life were to be realized when he was promoted to the job of “PawPaw” in 2007 and started the best job he ever had. His dedication to the physical and spiritual well-being of his family will be greatly missed and remembered.
