Commission addresses marina fire

by Martha Smith The Jackson County Park Marina fire was addressed at the last Jackson County Commission meeting held on January 27, 2020. Commission Chairman Tim Guffey read a statement aloud at the start of the meeting. “All the members of the Jackson County Commission, together with the employees of the county offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to those who have been affected by the fire early this morning at the Jackson County Park Marina. The whole community is praying for peace and comfort for those who lost loved ones in the fire and for healing for those who were injured. We are grateful to those men and women of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Scottsboro Fire Department, Red Cross, state offices and agencies and so many others that have reached out to help in times of tragedy.” County Engineer Jonathan Campbell presented two proposals to the Commission for County Road 17 repairs. Two firms, after reviewing results from geotechnical testing conducted earlier in 2019, were reviewed by the commissioners, with a unanimous vote for the second option that entails a more in-depth repair to the damage and restructuring of the subsurface, a stronger support system for the road itself and better drainage to prevent future collapses and failures on that stretch of road.
