William Arvin Stone: – 07/29/20

Colonel William Arvin “Buck” Stone, 90 of Sylvania passed away on Monday, July 20, 2020 in the arms of his wife and daughter. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at Rainsville Funeral Home with Rev. Sally Ensley officiating. Interment followed in New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.Dad fought over a decade with dementia, finally succumbing to end-stage Alzheimer’s.
Buck was born on Tuesday, September 10, 1929.He was a 1948 graduate of DeKalb County High School and worked in Chattanooga before enrolling at Jacksonville State. From there he transferred to Auburn and graduated as a mechanical engineer in 1954.
He became a member of Signal Mountain Baptist Church in 1972 where he became a deacon. He is still fondly remembered by many young members for his kindness. He loved singing old-time hymns, and even in the deepest stages of dementia, he remembered all the words.
Buck is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rita Sue; daughter, Cynthia (Ken) Stone-Hunter; sisters, Faye Straub, Opal Sunderland, Ardath Grizzell; sister-in-law, Syd Stone; brother-in-law, Ben Shirey, Sr.; many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Effie Campbell stone; stepmother, Lera Stone; brothers, Arlen, Floyd, Creed, Ray Stone; sisters, Hazel Wood, Marjorie Davenport, Pauline Roden, Jean Carden. The family give special thanks to the staff at Dominion, Alexian Village and Hearth Hospice. Dad had many precious angels and advocates among you. We thank you and know you held our Mr. Buck lovingly through these past three years in his homes away from home.
