Join the Alabama Cooperative Extension System for the Natural Resources Webinar Series. For each live Zoom webinar session attended in its entirety, people may receive one Professional Logging Manager (PLM) Credit and one Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) Credit. Certificates for attendees that provide their PLM and CFE information at registration will receive a certificate documenting their attendance after each session attended. On May 7th, the webinar will be Alabama Soils and USDA Web Soil Survey. From the coast to the mountains, Alabama has diverse soil landscape. Join us for an overview on Alabama’s soils and how to utilize the USDA Web Soil Survey for various land management needs. On May 21st, learning more about opportunities using portable sawmills. Portable sawmills are a valuable tool towards producing local timber products while also offering a potential business opportunity and improve economy. Attend to learn more about the application and economics of portable sawmills. These webinars are presented from 12 noon to 1 p.m.

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System Food Safety Team teaches ServSafe classes each year. These classes meet food service safety standards required for Retail Food Permit Holders by the Alabama Department of Public Health. The Jackson County ServSafe Certification Class will be held on May 12-13, 2025 at the Jackson County Health Department located at 204 Liberty Lane in Scottsboro. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s Food Safety and Quality team offers in-person Alabama Cottage Food Law trainings throughout the state. This training is for those who want to produce and sell certain nonhazardous food items from their home. The cost to attend a training is $25 and it is nonrefundable. Click on the training location you wish to attend to determine if that class and exam lasts 2 or 3 hours. The certification is good for three years. The class will be held on May 15, 2025 at the Jackson County Extension Office located at 27115 John T. Reid Parkway in Scottsboro. Go With The Flow Irrigation Basics is going to be a great meeting for anyone who has ever wanted to learn more about irrigation for their lawn or garden. We have an excellent opportunity to learn more from three Alabama Extension agents on May 22nd at Northeast Community College from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $10 per person with lunch included. Jackson County Extension will be hosting a Horse Management Field Day featuring guest speaker, Dr. Courtney Heaton, from Auburn University to teach equine nutrition, body scoring, and how to read a feed tag. Other topics to be presented include pasture and hay management. This is a great program for horse owners in North Alabama. Jackson County Extension will be partnering with Jackson County Soil and Water Conservation District for their “A Walk In The Woods – Boots on the Ground Habitat Management Workshop” on Wednesday, May 28th. Industry specialists will give presentations on forestry and wildlife topics, forest stands, food plots, and control burns, and NRCS will provide information on cost-share programs and practices for forestry and wildlife, and much more. Participants in the workshop will also walk through portions of the James D. Martin – Skyline Wildlife Management Area to see firsthand practices in use. This is a free event, but registration is required. Lunch will be provided. Please register by May 16, 2025.
