Smiles, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that is dedicated to getting people out of pain and improving oral health for low-income citizens.
Smiles, Inc. offers free dental care to adults (21 and older) who are at or below the 200% poverty level and are uninsured or have only Tenncare. They strive to help adults get to full dental health by offering extractions, fillings and minor surgery. Partials and dentures are provided for only $75.
Services are provided when a dentist or hygienist is available. Appointments are made on a first-come, first-served basis after applications are fully completed and submitted. The application for service can be found online at www.smilesclinic.org or at the clinic located at 170 Smith Lane in South Pittsburg.
Smiles, Inc. recently received a donation from the Tennessee Healthcare Resiliency Program. The donation will be used to purchase the building currently housing Smiles, Inc., add additional equipment and dental rooms, and purchase a van to provide transportation for patients. Although less than ¼ mile from Alabama, Smiles, Inc. says that they have found that most Alabama transportation options will not cross state lines.
Dr. Scott Shepherd, who retired his practice in Stevenson, currently serves as the Dental Director. Those on the Board include Norma Harvey, retired from Community Action, Tiffany Milligan who works for Community Action, Sherry Nelson who owns Nelson Accounting, Rebecca Long who is a founding member of Smiles and owns Patches in Scottsboro, John Young, Sam Nelson, Dr. Kaz Hasnani, Keisha Scales and Kim Trussell.
Not only does Smiles, Inc. provide dental services, but their group of volunteers also works to help citizens find resources for other health needs they may have.
