Ider High School’s Allison Black successfully spelled the word "disparage" in the 10th round of the 83rd annual competition to claim the Alabama Spelling Bee title at Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham. The 13-year-old beat out 58 other students who had previously won their school and county contest.
Black finished as first runner-up a year ago in the statewide competition. She will now represent the state of Alabama in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, held in Washington D.C. this summer. Adventure Travel sponsored the state spelling bee and will pay for Black’s trip to the national competition. First runner-up was Patrick Huang, of Calhoun County, and second runner-up was Sophie Williams, of Montgomery County.
