The Scottsboro Lady Wildcats picked up some good wins last week in early season action.
The Wildcats shutout Plainview in their first home game of the season, 14-0 and then beat DAR, 18-0 in an away game.
This past weekend, the Lady Wildcats competed in a tournament held in Decatur and went 3-2.
Scottsboro defeated West Morgan 10-3. In the game, Tyris Branford led the Wildcats at the plate going 3-for-3 with four stolen bases. Brooke Slaten and Hilary Mavromat each had two hits, with one of Mavromat’s being a home run. Brittany McConnell, Mavromat, and Emily Glover combined for six strikeouts on the mound.
Against Athens Bible, the Wildcats were led by Branford at the plate again as she knocked in three runs to help get a 7-2 win.
McConnell also added a RBI while going 2-for-2 at the plate. Mavromat and Glover combined for 11 strikeouts on the mound.
In a defensive battle against Athens, the Wildcats prevailed 1-0. Mavromat hit a solo home run to account for Scottsboro’s only run. She also gave up one hit on the mound in five innings of work.
Mavromat went deep again in a loss to Lawrence County. The Cats fell 2-1. Glover and McConnell each had two hits in the game. Mavromat collected seven strikeouts on the mound.
The Wildcats were 9-4 for the season heading into this week’s play and Scottsboro head coach Cindy Patterson was mostly pleased.
"We’ve gotten off to a good start, "Patterson said. "We are starting to hit the ball better and we are hoping that will progress as the season continues. We have some really tough games coming up so hopefully we’ll be ready for them. We have a good mixture of younger players and some older players that provide leadership, so I feel good about where we are so far."
The Wildcats are scheduled to host Grissom on Friday before heading to Gulf Shores for a tournament next week.
