The Longbeards of Jackson County, the local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is offering free White Oak seedlings as part of the Operation Oak program. Operation Oak is dedicated to restoring and creating Oak habits throughout the southeast. Since its inception, chapters and landowners in the Southeast have planted 480,000 Oak seedlings that provide important food sources for southeastern wildlife.
The program continues to be a great success with 123 NWTF chapters planting 14,100 Oak seedlings last year. This program is exclusively for NWTF local chapters and should not be confused with the Operation Oak Landowner Program. Seedlings may be planted on public or private property. However we suggest planting the White Oak seedlings in small groves instead of individually. This will increase the benefit to wild turkeys and other wildlife. The Oak seedlings are free, but if you would like to install tree shelters, they must be purchased through "Project Help" at 1-800-843-6983. Anyone may pick up the NWTF White Oak seedlings at the Jackson County Farmers Co-op in Scottsboro. Quantities are limited and need to be planted within the next ten days. For more information about this or any other NWTF program call 1-800-the –NWTF or locally call Mitch Adams at 256-228-6438.
