Habitat for Humanity of Jackson County will host its 4th annual Chili Challenge at Goose Pond Civic Center on Saturday, Feb. 27. Tickets are on sale at First National Bank, First Jackson Bank, First Southern State Bank, the Greater Jackson County Chamber of Commerce or from any Habitat board member. The price is $6.00 in advance or $7.00 at the door. Children 6 and under are free.
Your ticket is the gateway to a day of family fun. There will be a bake sale, a country store, scores of entertainers, a silent auction, (tickets to Disney World and Southwest Airlines will be among the auction items), and most importantly, an opportunity to sample chili recipes from 30 different cooks. Your admission ticket allows you to cast one vote for the best chili. Your ticket also entitles you to a chili hot dog lunch and a chance to win a cash prize of $100, $200 or $300. Habitat for Humanity of Jackson County (HFHJC) is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI). It is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization whose goal is to build simple, affordable houses in partnership with people in need of decent housing. Building costs are minimized by the use of volunteer labor, donated materials and discounted services. The Chili Challenge is Habitat’s only major yearly fund-raiser. All proceeds are used to build more houses. If you think you qualify for a Habitat house or know someone who might qualify, here are the general guidelines. The potential homeowner must be a resident of Jackson County for 12 months or more, have good credit, show a need for safe, adequate housing, be willing to help build the home (absolutely no special skills are needed to help build your home) and be able to afford a monthly mortgage payment of $300. Please contact Peggy at 256-259-0173 for more information. Habitat for Humanity of Jackson County is currently nearing completion of its third house in the Earnest J. Pruett subdivision in Hollywood. A fourth house, built in conjunction with EPCOT, is scheduled for completion by August of 2010. Habitat for Humanity of Jackson County couldn’t continue to operate without all the volunteers and donors who so generously support this important civic work. It is truly an enterprise of Jackson County residents helping Jackson County residents. So help us make February 27 a successful day of fun and celebration - make plans to attend the Chili Challenge! Doors open at 11:00 a.m. The silent auction bidding and cash drawing will conclude at 2:00 p.m. HFHJC thanks Jackson County for its support. Habitat for Humanity: A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out.
