Ellen Spangler, who started the 13th women’s shelter in the nation in the 70’s and Cathy Wherenberg-Howard, former Program Director of the Children’s Trust Fund of Alabama will be among the speakers at One Billion rising at the DeKalb Theatre, 306 Gault Avenue in Fort Payne on Thursday, February 14.
Ft. Payne and the surrounding area will join with activists around the world for One Billion Rising, the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.
One Billion Rising began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls.
The event will be held from 4:30 until 6 p.m.
The event is a call to action to create and fund a women’s shelter in DeKalb County. It is a call to action to encourage non-violence toward women by anyone. It is a call to action to have meaningful dialogue with the law enforcement agencies in the area about stronger attention on the current laws against domestic violence.
