It’s styling... 06/29/11

Everyday I stand in front of a very large mirror.  My clients sit in front of mirrors.  We give clients hand mirrors to check out their hair or makeup.  So I started to wonder about the history of mirrors.  Mirrors have had a long and colorful journey throughout history.  These days there is not a single home in the U.S. that doesn’t have a mirror.  Mirrors have become part of our everyday routine, most often unappreciated.

Onycholysis is a condition that causes nails to separate from the nail bed beginning at the distal or free edge of the nail.  The nail itself will appear healthy and even keep its shape.  When the nail separates from the nail bed it will appear white in color because there is air between the nail and the nail bed.

The sun emits an unthinkable amount of energy.  If you could place a piece of the sun the size of a pinhead on earth, you would not be able to get safely within 90 miles of it.  This energy is called electromagnetic radiation or the electromagnetic spectrum.  This energy travels to earth in waves, like sound, and the wavelengths are measured in meters.  Some of this tremendous energy reaches earth, and we call the visible portion of this energy “light.”  Because of this light energy which travels 186,000 miles per second, it is no wonder that this light energy can have a powerful effect on living things.

We all know that sunscreen is important, but you may be making some mistakes on what and where to apply it.  Apply the right amount of sunscreen.  Using a nickel-size for your face and two shot glasses’ worth for your body will make sure you have enough protection.  Twenty minutes before you start your exposure to the sun is enough time to let it soak in and give the best protection.

Nothing in the world makes one angrier than spending $15 - $25 dollars on a manicure and then accidentally rubbing a nail or bumping it into something and having it smudge or after two days it chips off.  Well, the folks at CND are hoping to bring ladies back to the salon with Shellac, an innovative hybrid nail color that stays shiny and bright for two weeks.  Yes, that’s right -- it lasts for two weeks without losing its luster.  Now, if you have a disaster where you run your fingers into something and crack your nail, this is not part of the guarantee.
