Qualifying over, local ballots set for elections

Qualifying for local municipal elections ended last Tuesday. Jackson County has several municipalities participating in the August 28 election.


A total of 11 people qualified to seek office in the City of Scottsboro. In the Mayor’s race, the incumbent Melton Potter will face Carol McCrary and Bob Starkey. Brent Miller qualified to run against current council member Thermon Bell for Place 1 of the Scottsboro City Council.  Patrick Stewart and Larry Kirkland will face current council member Gary Speers for Place 2.  Hollie Thompson and Don Croft qualified to face Robert Ferrell for Place 1 on the Scottsboro Board of Education. 

In the city of Bridgeport David Hughes and Leon Dave qualified to run for mayor. Chris Gulley, Edna Coffman, Garland Tipton, Gerald Thompson and Ella Henry will be on the ballot under Place 1. Dywayne Moore and Michelle Willis are running for Place 2, Bobby Seabolt and Ronnie Sartin for Place 3, Barry Hughes, Kenneth Moore and Cherice Taylor for Place 4 and Harold Dawson and Clarece Walker for Place 5.

In Stevenson, Rickey Steele will face Raymond Ferguson for mayor. For city council Wally Rowe and Wesley Parton qualified for Place 1, Brandon Gray and Mike Cloud for Place 2, Clyde Jackson and Glenda Taylor for Place 3, Keith Davis, James Davis and Danny Phillips for Place 4. Incumbent Bob Spencer was the only qualifier for Place 5.

The candidates who qualified for office in the town of Hollywood include Jerry Adkins and Frank Duke for Mayor, Virginia Bergman and Maranda Patterson for Place 1, Ann Martin, Elmer Hayes and Larry Jeffery for Place 2, Kristy Bell and Patty Allen for Place 3 and Richard Warr and Robert Cooper for Place 4. Billy Bennett was the only qualifier for Place 5.

In the town of Skyline Terry Benson, Archie Rice and Kyle Morris qualified to run for Mayor. Kym Chapman, Dwayne Brooks and Billy Jack Shelton qualified to run for  Place 1, Michael McAbee and Ralph Warren, Jr. for Place 2, David A. Talley for Place 3, Kyle Shelton for Place 4 and John Cook for Place 5.

Bob Matthews, Ron Fossett and James Albert Robbins qualified to seek the mayor’s office in the town of Section.  Janet Linville and Teresa Jones McCrary qualified for Place 1, Myra Maness, Derrell Massey and Harold Murdock for Place 2, Vandell Gann, Travis Gentry and Butch Green for Place 3, Betty F. Ryan, Jim Stringer and Kelly Williamson for Place 4 and Tim Byrum, Tommy Flammia, Jenny Jones and Arney Summerford for Place 5.

In Pisgah, the only race with opposition is the race for mayor, which includes John Poe and Leamon Smith.

In the town of Woodville Mike McKannan and David Wayne Meeks are running for Place 2 on the city council, Scotty Baugh and Laurie Gibson for Place 3, Mark Snodgrass and Jackie Franks for Place 4 and Victor Taylor and Tommy Franks for Place 5. Faye Cook is unopposed as mayor and Steve Helms is unopposed for Place 1.
Municipal elections will be held on Tuesday, August 28.
