Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) received seven awards, of which one was a top Pyramid award, at the Alabama Community College System Public Relations Association (ACCSPRA) 2012 Summer Conference held recently in Mobile. During the conference, the Pyramid Awards ceremony recognized two-year college marketing items created and used during 2011. Winners received either a Pyramid Award or an Achievement or Merit ribbon.
NACC won a top Pyramid Award for the Be A Mustang! full color recruiting brochure. Debra A. Barrentine, Director of Promotions and Marketing, and Andrea Okwu, Assistant to the President and Recruiter, worked on the project with WordSouth in Rainsville who helped design the brochure. “This has been a very popular recruiting tool and one of the most requested,” said Barrentine. Okwu added, “Prospective students are able to see a true representation of NACC through this brochure and we are excited to be informative in such a creative way.”
Barrentine also won an Award of Achievement in the Catalog Category for the NACC 2011-2012 Catalog/Student Handbook. “I truly enjoy working on this publication,” said Barrentine. “I have the best administrators, faculty and staff with whom to work and their input into the catalog process from draft to finished product is so important to its success.”
In addition, Barrentine won an Award of Achievement in the News Writing category for her published article, “NACC Alumnus Enjoys Dream Job”. The article highlighted Northeast alumnus, Heath Chambless, a 1991 graduate. Chambless now teaches at Dongguk University in South Korea. “My two years at NACC provided a solid foundation that instilled a lifelong appreciation for excellence in the field of education and teaching,” said Chambless. “I am so grateful that Heath let us share his story of success,” said Barrentine, “and am very pleased and humbled that the article was chosen for the Award.”
NACC Sigma Kappa Delta won an Award of Achievement in the Student Publications Category for the Aurora Magazine, sponsored by Joan Reeves. This publication includes original art and written works by NACC students as well as area high school and middle school writing competition winners. “The publication of Aurora continues to provide NACC students with a venue for their creative talents, and the recognition the magazine receives is a testament to the college’s exceptional student body and faculty,” said Reeves. Aurora is published annually by the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta and the English and Fine Arts Department at NACC.
The NACC Theatre won an Award of Achievement in the Special Events Publications category for the NACC Presents the Wizard of Oz theatre printed program and an Award of Merit in the Poster category for the NACC Presents Sylvia printed poster. In addition, the Theatre won an Award of Merit in the Brochure Category for the theatre brochure Inspire Imagine Create. Regan McClung, Theatre Office Manager, said, “I am very honored to be a part of a community that strives for excellence. We compel each other to do our best. I do all I can to represent NACC, and it feels great to be recognized. A huge thanks to everyone at NACC!”
“With these awards, our staff once again has demonstrated how talented, creative, and knowledgeable they are,” stated NACC President Dr. David Campbell. “What they do for the college through promotions is extremely important to us in that they get the word out to our community about all the opportunities for people here at Northeast.”
Barrentine attended the ACCSPRA annual conference. Dr. Kathi J. Swanson, President of CLARUS Corporation, was the featured presenter. Swanson presented Using Market Research to Position Your College in an Increasingly Competitive Environment. “I always look forward to attending this annual conference. It is a great way to network with peers,” said Barrentine. Barrentine is a past president of ACCSPRA. The mission of ACCSPRA is to enhance the image, strengthen and promote awareness and public perception of the Alabama Community College System.
Earlier this year, NACC won awards from the National Higher Education Marketing Report at its 27th Annual Educational Advertising Awards competition. The 2011 Aurora—Art and Literature literary magazine won a top Gold Award and the 2011-2012 NACC Catalog/Student Handbook won a Silver Award.
