Electric Power Board adopts power alerting system

Scottsboro Electric Power Board recently adopted a system of power alerts that enables customers to actively participate in managing the total power system load. SEPB General Manager Jimmy Sandlin explained that there is no shortage of power supply; they are simply asking customers to cut down on excessive power use to help keep utility costs low. If you receive power from SEPB you may have received the following notification last week: “RED-STOP!” A red power alert means that power loads have increased due to hot weather, and in order to help lower wholesale power costs you should only use the necessary amount of electricity that you need. Sandlin said “We’re not asking people to sit around in a hot house, but look around and unplug things that aren’t in use.” On really hot days Sandlin suggests leaving your thermostat on 80 degrees between the hours of 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

If the power alert is green that means the SEPB is advising that no conservation measures are needed. A yellow alert means that power costs have increased and customers are advised to conserve if possible. During yellow alerts the power board advises customers to set their summer thermostats at 78 degrees or higher. Power conservation during these periods will save the power board money and result in lower rates for customers. A pink power alert means that power shortages will occur and rolling black-outs may be necessary to maintain stability of the electric grid.

SEPB will send out email notifications to its customers when the power alert changes, but you may also check Twitter, Facebook, Cable Ch. 2 or the SEPB website.
