It's styling - 05/16/12

Wrinkles occur because we age.  We gradually stop producing collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm.  Two things accelerate the loss of collagen; sun exposure and smoking.  Can you reverse damage done to the skin?  Can anti-aging creams really turn back time? Antioxidants such as green tea or Vitamin E aim to halt the sun damage and destruction of the collagen below the surface of the skin.  Hyaluronic acid soaks in moisture, which plumps the tissue under the skin.  Hydroxy acids serve as exfoliants, removing the old skin so that the new and improved skin can shine though.

Peptides came to the cosmetic industry’s attention due to their ability to heal wounds by increasing production of collagen.  Retinol is the over-the-counter version of Retin-A, a vitamin A compound.  Retin A is available in several prescription strength compounds in addition to retinol, these retinoids prevent the compounds that break down collagen from even forming, and with continued use, retinoid can spur new collagen production.  Retinol is frequently recommended by Dermatologists because it is the only ingredient that has scientific proof to back up its claim to help reverse the signs of aging.  Also, do not confuse Hyaluronic acid injections with creams that contain Hyaluronic acid.  The best results are the injections.

We will forever be searching for the silver bullet to solve the aging process, but good healthy living, eating fresh foods, drinking tons of water and exercise are probably some of the best defenders of youth.

This column is dedicated to my Mother, who on May 16 will turn 95.  She was a teacher for many years and the doctors tell us she has the health of a 70 year old. You never sit down to eat at Mother’s table without fresh fruit and vegetables on the table. Her secret is good healthy living and keeping physically busy and mentally moving.

Happy Birthday Mom!
