Scottsboro Heads to State

The Scottsboro Wildcats roared in a big way during the Class 5A North Regional softball tournament this past weekend. After falling to Athens 15-5 in the opening round, the Wildcats were one loss away from having their season ended.

Fortunately for Scottsboro and head coach Cindy Patterson, the Wildcats came alive to win four consecutive games in the loser’s bracket to play in the region championship game. In their second game of the tournament, Scottsboro defeated Columbia, 7-1.

In their third game against Cullman, the Wildcats found themselves in a close battle. After beating East Limestone in their first round game, the Cullman Bearcats fell to the eventual regional champion Lawrence County in the second round, thus placing them in the loser’s bracket against Scottsboro. Scottsboro out battled Cullman to take a 4-3 win and to move one step closer to securing a state tournament berth.

In their fourth game of the tournament, the Wildcats got revenge. Losing to Athens by 10 runs in the first round, Scottsboro managed to hold Athens to just three runs to take a 5-3 victory.

The win propelled Scottsboro into the regional championship game against Lawrence County. Lawrence County defeated Scottsboro 8-5 in the championship game.

Finishing runner-up in the regional tournament enabled Scottsboro to qualify for the Class 5A state tournament scheduled to begin this week in Montgomery. In the first round, Scottsboro is scheduled to play Chelsea at 10:30 on Thursday. Chelsea defeated Hueytown 11-1 in the South Central regional championship game. If the Wildcats defeat Chelsea, they will play the winner of Mortimer Jordan vs. Spanish Fort.
