TVA in-lieu bill to come up again this session

The Jackson County Commission and Legislative Delegation have decided to move forward with a new TVA-in-lieu-of Tax bill for this Legislative Session.  They had previously discussed allowing County Attorney John Porter to work with Judge Little to extend the deadline for the bill until next year’s Legislative Session. Commission Chairman Sadie Bias, Commissioner Horace Clemmons and County Administrator Sandra Erickson met with Senator Shadrack McGill, Representatives  John Robinson and  Wayne Johnson and a bill writer from Montgomery last week to discuss details of the new bill, which will be presented in Montgomery before the current session ends on May 21.

Bias said that in the new bill the money allotted to the ambulance service will be raised, and fire departments will be given money in the new bill as well.

While Bias thought that much of the wording was wrong in the last TVA-in-lieu- of Tax bill, she commented that the delegation is getting it right this time.

She said, “I think they had really thought the law through. They took input (from the commission and citizens) to heart and included that in the bill.”

Commissioner Horace Clemmons said that while the delegation did not add everything they asked for, they did add several things. “The delegation worked with us well, I believe it’s about as good a bill as we could get,” he said.
