Sittin’ and knittin’ - 04/27/11

This week I am taking a break from afghan squares and giving you the directions for a baby jacket.. Next week I will give you the directions for the rest of the set.

Materials: For the complete set, you will need 4 ounces of 2 or 3 ply yarn, size 1, 2, and 3 needles, 2 yards ribbon, 1 small button, a stitch holder and a tapestry needle.

Gauge: 8 stitches = 1 inch.

This jacket is knitted lengthwise, garter stitch throughout. A row is once across the needle, a rib is twice across the needle.

Front: With # 3 needles, cast on 60 stitches, knit 2 rows (1 rib).

On next row, *knit 50 stitches (leaving 10 for the yoke at top), turn, slip the first stitch and knit back.
Next row, knit all 60 stitches. Turn, and knit one row on all 60 stitches.* Repeat these 4 rows, from * to * until there are 35 ribs at the lower edge. This is the width of one side of the front.

Sleeve: Starting at the lower edge, knit 35 stitches and slip these stitches onto a stitch holder. On remaining 25 stitches, work as follows: knit 15 stitches, turn, slip 1 and knit remaining 14 stitches, leaving 10 stitches for the yoke.

Cast on 30 stitches at the beginning of the next row for sleeve. (55 stitches on needle).

Starting at the bottom of the sleeve, work as follows:

*Knit one row on all 55 stitches.

Next row, knit 45 stitches (leaving 10 stitches for cuff). Turn, slip first stitch and knit to within 10 stitches of end of needle (yoke).

Turn, slip first stitch and knit to end of needle (bottom of sleeve)*.

Repeat these 4 rows from * to * until there are 25 ribs at the cuff edge.

Back: Now bind off the 30 stitches cast on for sleeve, pick up the 35 stitches from stitch holder and repeat directions for front until there are 62 ribs across back. Make other sleeve and other front to correspond.

Bind off loosely and sew up sleeve seams.

Finish: With # 1 needles, pick up and knit 92 stitches around the neck edge and work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2 for 4 rows.

Next row, make a beading by *knit 1, knit 2 together, yarn over and repeat from * to last 2 stitches, knit 2 together. Bind off loosely, thread ribbon through beading, tuck ends and trim..

I will be teaching a knitting class in my home the last Saturday of April from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. If you wish to attend or if you have any questions, please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
