April is Sexual Assault Awareness month

Pictured are local officials and volunteers who planted flowers last week to promote awareness of sexual assault. The month of April has been designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in the United States. The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.

According to the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center, in 2010 there were 1248 reported rape cases in Alabama...this does not count the number of cases that were reduced to sexual assaults or sexual abuse cases or went unreported....the good news is the number went down from 2009 when the reported number was 1428.

In support of those who have been abused and to promote awareness, local officials along with members of the Jackson County Sexual Assault Response Team and volunteers planted flowers at the Scottsboro City Hall last week.

On Thursday, April 28, the public is invited to make a donation of $2 and wear blue jeans to work during Jeans for Justice Day. For more information or to make a donation, call Crisis Services at 256-574-5826.
