During the recent Jackson County Commission work session, a request from Life Resource Services was heard.

Josh Sherlin requested that the Commission provide the homeless served through Life Resources with passes for the county bus service.  The bus service is funded with local, federal and state funds. Each trip costs $5.25 for round trip per  persons under the age of 65, while round trip ticket costs per persons over 65 are $4.25. It was stated that most of the trips for the homeless were to and from health care appointments or visits.  According to Sherlin, there is only one person on staff and they can’t leave to transport people to doctor visits, interviews or other necessary appointments.  Jackson County Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen questioned if the services provided by Life Resources was available to any homeless person. Harnen stated that the Sheriff’s Office transports transients to Huntsville all the time, unaware that there was a local facility.
Commissioners discussed an invoice in the amount of $3,000 to the Alabama  Mountain Rivers and Valleys. Commissioner Jason Venable mentioned that several appropriations have recently been cut and there are others that he would prefer to fund in the alternative.
Commissioner Tim Guffey made a motion to table Community Corrections until January, 2018. Venable stated there had been some discussion and they are in the process of making requests for information from Community Corrections.
