The commissioners moved several items to next week’s agenda at the meeting on June 17th. County Administrator Bob Manning asked permission for items to be moved on the sanitation budget list; a move that would not affect their budget in any way but would only organize and designate more efficiently, and a Jackson County EDA board appointment was looked at.

After posting, only one letter came in. The term will expire in three months. These items were moved to next week’s agenda.
Manning also reported about the amount the county receives from funds received from license tag sales and renewals and driver’s license sales and renewals. Manning stated, “I know we’ve all heard a lot of complaints on how much tags cost, but this is information I want to get to everyone, where people can see the truth - see what’s going on. The current tag in Jackson County is $24.25. That is your tag fee. Now, the next question is, where did this money go? $1.25 goes to the Jackson County Commission based on 66,000 tags on an average year. That gives Jackson County Commission $82,500 in annual revenue. On those same 66,000 tags, the state of Alabama is taking $23 per tag, for $1,518,000 per year. That’s 99.05% going to the state. Driver’s licenses, you don’t do as many driver’s licenses, and they’re a state license; they’re the same in any county you go to, $36.25 for a regular driver’s license fee. The county is taking $1.50 home. The state’s taking $34.75 home on that one. That’s the same across all the counties in the state. We’re sitting here with the same fees we’ve probably had for 40 or 50 years, at least. I would say that probably none of you knew these numbers. That’s just one of the items we want to clarify and get this information out to people. There’s going to be a lot more information like this.” Manning also confirmed the fee for license plates will be going up in conjunction with the new gas tax.
