The Jackson County Board of Education called a special meeting for the 5th of June to fill the vacancy left by the passing of one of their board members, Cecil Gant.

Present at the meeting were board members, President Chad Gorham, Vice President Dr. Angela Guess, Board member Mike Matthews, Board member Charles West, and Superintendent Kevin Dukes. The Porter Law Group was also present to oversee the process and answer any questions.
President Chad Gorham took some time to speak honorably about Gant, and shared memories from a lifetime spent in education and the community. Afterwards, the board members and attendees shared a moment of silent prayer and quiet reflection in remembrance of Gant and his family and friends. The nominees for the vacancy were then announced by the board members. The board then motioned with seconds being counted as votes.
West nominated Linda Smith, Matthews nominated Chris Knight, and Gorham nominated Dwight Griffith, with none of the nominees motioned passing. The board rescheduled another meeting for nominating a new member for Friday, the 21st of June at 8 a.m. Since the vacancy, the board has had 30 days to fill the seat. If in the event the board cannot agree on this new member, the state will then take over and appoint the new member for them.
