Faith:  Making faith your own

It is a common problem that Christians often accept things as true without first putting them to a test.  Many people accept a teaching as “True” on the merits of a favored relative’s faith in the matter.  We are admonished to test the teachings to see if they are indeed of God.  1 John 4:1 (NKJV) ¹ “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
This might explain in part why we hear of many students who leave faith when they go off to college away from home.  When I went to a church- related University in the mid 60’s, I was in shock at how many students claimed to have come from strong church backgrounds, yet slept in on Sundays and often behaved in very unchristian ways.  It might also explain why so many individuals are leaving the religion of their youth.  Too often we hear young adults say, “I used to believe this, but I never was challenged to test it.”
The problem is one that is more prevalent among young people, but I am finding more adults making drastic changes because they too were never grounded.  The real tragedy comes, however, when anyone blindly accepts something else just because it’s different, yet they are unwilling to have the openness to have that new belief tested as well!
There is only one kind of heart that will find God’s truth and be saved.  John 3:19-21 (NKJV) ¹⁹And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. ²¹But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”  We must be lovers of the light and willing to examine our practices in view of the light of God’s Word.  Our hearts must be sincere if we hope to find the genuine Truths of God’s Word.  Jesus challenged the Jews to test themselves and find the truth:
John 8:31-32 (NKJV) ³¹ “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.  ³² And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
John 7:17 (NKJV) ¹⁷“If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.”
Truth has not changed nor the way to find it.  Satan also has deceitfully placed deadly error before Christians for centuries and called it truth.  He, however, does not want it to be tested at all.  2 Corinthians 11:13-15 (NKJV) ¹³“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.  ¹⁴And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.   ¹⁵Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.”
My friends, It is crucial that each one be grounded in the truth of God.  Ephesians 4:14-15 (NKJV) ¹⁴ “that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, ¹⁵but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—
Jesus challenged the Jews who were offended by Him:  John 5:39-40 (ESV) ³⁹You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, ⁴⁰ yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.”   My friend, make faith your very own, by putting it to the test of God’s Word of a sincere search of God’s Word!
