Anchors of faith

Part 4
As we conclude a four-part study, this week we’ll look at two other Anchors of Our Faith as presented by the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul’s writing of Hebrews 2:1-4. First The Witness of the Eyewitnesses.  “³How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; ⁴God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?” (Hebrews 2:3-4).
Bertrand Russell stated in his book,  Why I Am Not a Christian:  “Historically, it is quite doubtful whether Christ ever existed at all, and if He did,  we do not know anything about him.”  He states this in spite of the best evidence and denies the testimony of eye witnesses  - 2 Peter 1:16-18 (KJV) “¹⁶For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.”
The Apostle  John also declared that they had seen these things with their own eyes. “That which was from the beginning, which we have Heard, which we have Seen with our eyes, which we have Looked Upon, and our hands have Handled, of the Word of Life” (1 John 1:1).
We must either pity the New Testament writers as victims of a hoax, or else accuse them of willfully conspiring to perpetrate the most colossal hoax in history.  Friends, the New Testament is history.  It is written in a space-time dimension –  that is, in a historical context specifying those times, persons, places, and events which offer themselves for verification.  Other documents contemporary with the New Testament verify its accuracy in regard to statements on morals, politics, culture, economics, religion, people, places.  These eyewitnesses were willing to give up their lives for the conviction they had of the truthfulness of their testimony.  The only real question is: “Do you believe the witnesses?”
In these four articles we have seen The Anchor of Prophecy; The Divine Origin of Christianity; and the Witness of the Eyewitness, but there is one more Anchor for our faith:  The Signs and Wonders and Divers Miracles  (Heb. 2:4) “God also bearing witness by signs and wonders and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will.”  The way Christ used miracles proved His divinity.   Notice His words to Thomas,    John 20:29-31 “Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.  And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:  But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”   These things that are written confirm our faith!
Hebrews 12:1-2a “¹Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, ²Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
We can boldly profess with Paul:  (2 Tim. 1:12) “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day.”
