Have you ever heard the phrase “Music soothes the savage beast?”

Music can be like your best friend- a sympathetic ear who listens to your deepest and darkest secrets without judgement. When your stress gets to be too much, it’s wonderful to have that special song to turn to.
When you’re dealing with grief and/or trauma, try to create a play list of songs that are healing, but not heart-wrenching. It’s best to start with a few songs that reflect your current emotional state and then add three or four songs that help you move towards your desired emotional state. Music therapy can promote wellness, manage stress, improve communication and even lessen pain.
We asked survivors of sexual and domestic violence to share their favorite musical de-stressors with us. Here are some empowering choices from their lists.
