Every year the CDC conducts the High School Youth Behavior Survey in all 50 states.

The survey asks middle and high school students about various behaviors during the past 12 months.  CDC recently released the most recent results (2015) for Alabama. This is a summary of their findings.
In Alabama:
About Weapons and Bullying
•22% of students had carried a weapon (gun, knife, or club) at least 1 day during the past 30 days
•10% had carried a gun during the past 30 days and  5% had carried a gun to school
•8% did not go to school because they had felt unsafe at school or on their way to/from school at least 1 day during the past 30 days.
•20% of girls and 7% of boys were bullied electronically during the past 30 days.
•20% of students were bullied on school property within the past 30 days.
About dating violence and suicide
•13% of girls and 7% of boys said they had been forced to have sex when they didn’t want to
•14% of girls and 8% of boys said they had experienced physical dating violence at least one or more times in the past year
•13% of girls and 6% of boys said they had experienced sexual dating violence at least one or more times in the past year
•30% of students said they had felt so sad or hopeless that they stopped doing some usual activities during the past 12 months
•18% of students said they had seriously considered suicide
•14% of students said they actually made a plan how they would attempt suicide
About alcohol and drugs
•13% of girls and 9% of boys said they had attempted suicide one or more times in the past year have had at least one alcoholic drink in their life
•60% of all students say they drank alcohol at least once in the past 30 days
•A staggering 21% said they drank alcohol (other than a few sips) before the age of 13
•30% of students say they currently drink alcohol at least once in the past 30 days
•32% admit to using marijuana one or more times in their life
•4% of girls and 10% of boys tried marijuana before the age of 13
•17% of students currently use marijuana
•10% have used synthetic marijuana (K2, Spice) but less than 6% have used cocaine, ecstasy, or meth
•20% admit to taking prescription drugs (Oxycontin, Percocet, Vicodin, codeine, Adderal, Ritalin or Xanax) without a doctor’s prescription
•11% admit they have used inhalants (sniffed glue, breathed contents of aerosol sprays or paints to get high) in their lifetime
•2% of girls and 6% of boys have injected an illegal drug into their body one or more times in their life.
•25% of all students said they were offered, sold or given an illegal drug on school property within the last 12 months
About sexual behaviors
•47%  of all students said they had sexual intercourse
•4% of girls and 10% of boys said they had intercourse (for the first time) before age 13
•12% of girls and 20% of boys said they had sex with 4 or more persons during their life
•35% of all students said they were currently sexually active
•50% of all students who were sexually active said they did NOT use a condom
•75% of girls who were sexually active said they did not use birth control
•    97% of girls said they did not use an IUD
•    92% of girls who were sexually active said they did not use a shot
•    17% of all students who were sexually active said they did not use any method to prevent pregnancy
So you’re probably thinking- so what?  I know statistics are boring to many of us, but these numbers are worrisome due to their extremely risky behaviors. More on that next time.
