Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2019
Sometimes it seems that all the needs around us are so great.

Every time you listen to the news, drive around town or even scroll through social media, the needs can just be overwhelming and we aren’t sure how to make a difference. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and we work all month to highlight the need for support for survivors. We have several upcoming opportunities where you can get involved, support those in need and help to make a difference in our area.
All month we will be promoting Jeans 4 Justice. “Jeans 4 Justice” originated in 1999 when an Italian appeals court judge overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans at the time of the rape. The judge said it was impossible to remove someone’s jeans without that person’s consent. Global protests followed, and since then, thousands of people have worn jeans to work to help raise awareness of sexual assault. How can you participate? Ask your employer if your company or office can join in. Choose a day in April as your designated day to pay a chosen donation amount and wear your jeans to work that day. (Due to restrictions, if you are unable to wear jeans, we can provide pins for you to wear instead to show your support.) Contact Crisis Services Jackson County Office to have donations picked up and don’t forget to share pictures with us of your company’s participation. Crisis Services Jackson County Office will have a booth at Market on the Square. We will have information to share as well as ‘Picking up the Pieces’ jewelry available for donations.
There will be a display all month at the Scottsboro Public Library. We are asking anyone interested to participate by decorating a shoe with pictures or words of support for survivors of sexual assault. The shoe can be painted and you can use markers or whatever you have to decorate. We hope to receive shoes for men, women and children to represent that sexual assault has no boundaries. You may contact Crisis Services Jackson County office to turn in your shoes as early in April as possible.
And finally, we will host the annual Flowers for Survivors dedication on Wednesday, April 17th @ 11:30 at Scottsboro City Hall. Our speaker this year is Mr. Brent Benson, Assistant District Attorney and member of the Jackson County Coalition Against Domestic Violence. This short ceremony will be a great opportunity for survivors to see the support available to them. Sometimes strength comes from knowing you are not alone. Please plan to come and show your support!
If you have any questions, want to get involved, or if you need someone to talk to about your experience with sexual assault or domestic violence, please contact Crisis Services of North Alabama at 256.574.5826 or our 24/7 HELPline at 256.716.1000.
