Dr. Donald Williamson, state health officer, signed an emergency order on Friday, October 14, making the possession or sale of chemical compounds typically found in synthetic marijuana substance unlawful.

The substances were placed under the Schedule I of the Alabama Controlled Substance List effective October 24.

Anyone who sells, furnishes or gives away any synthetic cannabiniod product to a minor will be guilty of a felony offense and be subject to imprisonment for 10 to 99 years and fine up to $60,000.

Anyone who sells furnishes or gives away any synthetic cannabiniod product will be guilty of a felony offense and be subject to imprisonment for 2 to 20 years and fined $30,000.

Anyone who possesses any synthetic cannabiniod product will be guilty of a felony offense and be subject to imprisonment for 1 to 10 years and fined up to $15,000.

Synthetic cannabinoids are marketed under many product names including but not limited to “Spice” and “K2”.  They are sold under the guise of being “incense and “not for human consumption” even though the sellers know that the buyers intend to ingest them.

The “high” for synthetic marijuana may last no more than 20 minutes, but users can experience chronic side effects for weeks.
