Sittin’ and knittin’ - 08/31/11
As I mentioned last week, here are the directions for the wrist warmers that match the shrug from the prior column.
The recommended yarn is Simply Soft available at Wal-Mart and is packaged in 6oz skeins - you’ll need two which will be enough for both the shrug and wrist warmers; size 8 and 9 single point needles, one set of size 8 double pointed needles, and a tapestry needle.
Gauge: 20 stitches and 25 rows = 4 inches in the pattern with larger needles.
Abbreviations: k - knit, p - purl, tog - together, skp - slip one stitch, knit one stitch and pass slipped stitch over knitted stitch, sl = slip (unless otherwise indicated, always slip a stitch as if to purl), RS - right side, yo - yarn over.
Directions: Make 2.
Using double pointed needles, cast on 36 stitches.
Round 1: purl. Round 2: knit. Round 3: purl.
Round 4 (RS): (k1, yo, k2, k2tog, skp, k2, yo) 4 times.
Round 5: knit all stitches and yo’s (yo’s are open laced).
Repeat rounds 4 and 5 for pattern until piece measures approximately 5 ½” from beginning
ending with round 5.
Thumb Opening:
Row 1: (k1, yo, k2, k2tog, skp, k2, yo) 4 times. Turn.
Row 2: Purl all stitches and purl yo in back (the yo’s are now closed for the top of the mittens), turn.
Repeat last 2 rows 2 more times.
Work Rounds 4 and 5 as rounds, knit all the yo’s from back.
Work even in rounds until piece measures approximately 9” from beginning.
Work last 4 rounds as follows: (k2, p2) 9 times. Bind off in size larger needle. With tapestry needle, tuck in ends and trim.
Please note that I will stop writing this column after this article and one more. It has been my pleasure and I have enjoyed it immensely. l will continue to provide help for anyone who needs it.
